The project BE GREEN is a collaboration of 5 schools (France, Bulgaria, Italy, Iceland and Turkey) and an Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences (IAKE : non-profit scientific association). It’s a project which is organized by a team of several teachers, it is an international relationship of 6 places with a different culture, different educational systems and a different integration in the EU because of their location. The priority of the partnership BE GREEN is through using PBL, ICT and English as a foreign language to study in non-formal and formal class on topics like the environment, sustainability and to promote the Green Deal policy through PBLs. This will help teachers to share didactics and to collaborate and create online lessons in the contemporary digitalera.
The major importance of this project named BE GREEN, as compared to other projects carried out in our schools, is that this one will implement the EU goals in the classroom lessons. The first goal for implementation is ENVIRONMENT and CLIMATE CHANGE. It is our priority because we believe that stimulating our students’ interest in environmental issues is necessary, as well as European cooperation heading to a common good. The students / not only those involved in the project but all in classrooms next year/ will have the opportunity to learn in small groups online or in the classroom through their subject lessons about the environmental policy of Europe and to develop GREEN SKILLS - our second goal. They will be able to use the new technologies they have been studying in school and in this way, they will be provided with the chance to use these tools in real-life situations in order to also improve them. Countries of the EU and the rest of the world can learn to both appreciate and respect Nature as a fundamental part of the Environment across European coresponsibility. It is a unique opportunity for schools from far away countries to come together, which otherwise would hardly be possible, thus facilitating the participants’ perception of a diverse but shaped European identity. Working on different topics and writing PBLessons we will implement our third goal - OPEN AND DISTANT LEARNING support. Trying to implement those objectives during the project lifetime we will give an excellent opportunity for the students to enrich their knowledge and culture by working together with other European students (for many of them it will be a collaboration for the first time), for the teachers to collaborate with other teachers, and also to get to know other methods of teaching in order to improve their own, and for the schools to be involved in an international project. Especially the teachers will be able to share experiences and adopt new methodologies that will have as a purpose the improvement of education and teaching in their institutes and the strengthening of their schools. The project will also help students and teachers to be more aware and well-informed of the fact that they are part of the European society through real and personal acquaintances and contacts. Moreover, cooperating with people from other countries leads to lifelong relationships and friendships and reduces psychological reluctance leading to the acceptance of the differences and stimulating communication through a common language. The innovation of the project will be focused on the realization by the 5 schools involved in the project of a lot of purposes for online lessons and activities and formal and non-formal teaching methods. These lessons will show more aspects related to the importance which Sustainability has in our lives. For example, although Climate is a value in itself, there are also concrete interests of human beings, companies, or institutions that have a great impact on the environment and especially on climate change. These interests can be economic, social, or political. It is of great importance that our students, for their present and future life, discover the two dimensions of action as there is the individual level of acting on one hand and the common political acting on the other hand. Students, acting as consumers, have almost always an impact on nature. And so does their acting as political beings as well. It is therefore important to introduce the dimension of an economic and political decision, making it a part of this project. In covering the political and economic dimensions the partners of this project will get into contact with representatives of universities, companies, etc. and in doing so they will actively involve in their communities. The educational organization, partner of the project will help and support teachers during their work on writing lessons. During the C1 will organize teachers' course - linked to the project.
During the project period, our goal will be to use new technologies and to make students think of the Environment and sustainable future. We will focus on the development and evaluation of the Green Deal topics: Biodiversity and Measures to protect our fragile ecosystem, From farm to fork or Ways to ensure more sustainable food systems, Sustainability in EU agriculture and rural areas thanks to the common agricultural policy, Clean energy, Sustainable industry and Ways to ensure more sustainable, more environmentally-respectful production cycles, Building and renovating and The need for a cleaner construction sector, Sustainable mobility - Promoting more sustainable means of transport, Eliminating pollution and Measures to cut pollution rapidly and efficiently, Climate action and Making the EU climate neutral by 2050. We implement these topics at school, through the following subjects: PBL of Economy, History, Science, Human Science, Maths, ICT.
The main priority of the project BE GREEN is to help teachers in their work promoting environmental stability and fight against climate change. To achieve this we will implement in lessons parts of European Policy for Sustainable Environment: the Green Deal. The final product: a book /paper and online/ of Project based lessons will help the teachers to PROMOTING INTEREST of the students and to EXCELLENCE in STEAM. The book will be translated into 7 European languages.
The second output is a website. The above-mention purposes can be reached through dealing with the topic of the importance of a quick fight against climate change for a sustainable future. Taking all this into consideration, our project team proposes the following objectives, because they are mentioned in school development plans and will be covered by the project: - acquiring new key competence in using ICT in each lesson; - developing the knowledge and ownership of European nature and respect for European sustainability; - promoting and using new innovative practices in classroom education; - promoting and using the non-formal and formal strategies in education processes - collecting in a book of PBLessons - preventing any manifestations of xenophobia, and strengthen national pride and awareness of all project participants; - improving and building on their foreign language competence; - building strong relationships between people, schools, and cities that will not finish when the project comes to an end; - helping teachers, students, parents, and members of local communities to become aware of the sustainability of our continent. To implement our goals, our team (students, teachers, and members of local communities) will work together in different countries involved in the partnership, within 9 topics and implement them in PBLessons and will promote interest and excellence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and the STEAM approach.
The main chapters are:
- CLIMATE ACTION
- ELIMINATING POLLUTION
- SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY
- BUILDING AND RENOVATION
- SUSTAINABLE INDUSTRY
- CLEAN ENERGY
- SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE
- FROM FARM TO FORK
- BIODIVERSITY
We will do these activities, subdivided into 45 project-based lessons. During the project, the common work of teachers will focus on the PBL creation, the collection of information, informal training, meetings with specialists in universities, analysis, and laboratory experiments, marina clubs, researching in libraries, searching on the internet, English translations, making the dissemination materials and the final products. All the results of the researches will be edited and implement in the lessons of the book. During the LTTA, students will discover people’s needs, similarities, and differences in those of the countries of the project partners, they will appreciate their practical solutions and they will find out how to live sustainably. So, through the common experiences and pursuits, they will be led to a more prosperous international understanding of the environment and they will share their varied and rich experiences. Through different events, they will come in contact with the topic motivating all their senses, not just as an intellectual or rational exercise. Besides this, these different approaches are needed in order to make room for emotion and creativity. We also want to activate the so-called average students to explore their unknown and hidden interests and capabilities and get familiar with new mentalities. The project will be a genuine support for those who come from poorer families who cannot afford to go abroad. Any single meeting will be a motivating factor to work even harder. The results will be shared by partners and made public by using effective communication tools such as an e-Twinning platform. Furthermore, they will be collected in a book that will contain 45 project-based lessons ready for use in the classroom or during online education.
The project BE GREEN will allow us to have: - tangible results: a book in 6 different languages, new ICT skills, improving spoken English, eTwinning , reports , a website, etc. - intangible results: helpful lessons in periods of distant education and ways of teaching/learning, changes in students ‘ attitudes and many insights gained that will show afterwards. We will use the Erasmus+ Project Results Platform for the visualization of the achievement and results sharing. The School Education Gateway will promote our project through a public website. Therefore, our project will be opened to other educational stakeholders in order to encourage cooperation between schools and other organizations.
