Travelling to Heraklion - Information

Heraklion is the biggest city in Crete, in the biggest island of Greece, on the southern border Europe's. It is located about 340 km south from Athens, the capital of Greece. It is the capital of Crete with about 200.000 inhabitants.

The old port of Heraklion

From Athens you can reach Heraklion normally two different ways:

1 By airplance
The International Code of Heraklion Airport is HER and its name is "Nikos Kazantzakis", in honor of the international famous writer. "Nikos Kazantzakis" airport is one of the most important international airports in Greece and holds one of the top positions in charter flights, connecting Crete with all the major capitals of the world. Heraklion Airport is about 5 kilometers far away from the city center, where you can reach very quickly and economically using either city buses or taxis.

2By ship
There are daily sailings (at night every season of the year and daily during the summer) from the port of Athens (Piraeus) to the port of Heraklion. The trip lasts about 6 to 8 hours and takes place with the fastest and most modern Mediterranean ships. The port is only about 1,5 km far away from the city center, Whether you choose an airplane or a ferry, your trip to the city of Heraklion will be a special experience!
